After visiting Anton in Canada, I had a renewed lease on life, or so it seemed. He’d specifically mentioned wanting to have another child, which was music to my ears. I’d been so afraid after the miscarriage to even broach the subject with him, which made my own pain worse. We did both want the same things in life, and he hadn’t only said so because I was already pregnant. I’d been so afraid that he’d want to stop trying, but after the ferry ride back to the hotel, we tried early and often. For all I knew, I could be with child now.

It’d been too soon to check once I returned to New York City, so I went ahead and booked an appointment with Dr. Allen. I had some lab tests done and it wasn’t even forty-eight hours later that she called to have me come in to do more. I was worried, but the sooner she told me I could get pregnant again, the better I would feel.

I’d initially been worried that the recent drugs would be detected in my system, but other than the ecstasy, the painkillers and antidepressants had been prescribed to me. I wasn’t sure what to expect today, so I chose to dress more casually. I took the afternoon off from work and soon arrived at my OBGYN’s office.

“Dr. Allen will see you now,” the receptionist told me not long after signing in. I’d barely had time to open a magazine. My nerves were shot, so it was better to go and get this over with. If all went well, I would have some celebratory news to share with Anton on tonight’s call.

“Thank you,” I responded politely, then followed the nurse waiting at the door.

The standard height and weight measurements were taken, as well as the urine sample, then I was back inside the room, which suddenly felt cold and sterile. It reminded me a lot of the hospital room I’d woken up in, and not wanting to relive that nightmare, I shivered and diverted my attention to my cell phone screensaver, which was a picture of the two of us together on Granville Island.

The door opened and I smiled at my doctor. “Hopefully, you come bearing good news.”

It was an attempt to wipe the serious expression off of her face, but it backfired when she frowned even more. The chill I felt multiplied, and I had a sharp ache in my lower gut. This woman didn’t look like someone about to tell me to resume trying for another child with my husband. Had she found the ecstasy in my system?

“Whatever it is, just tell me.”

I was scared, nervous, and I just wanted to know what was going on. Dr. Allen’s facial expression softened as she took in a seat beside me. “Your lab results didn’t provide the answers I was hoping for, Mrs. Kingston.”

“What do you mean?” I asked, then shifted uncomfortably in my seat.

“We’re going to have to do some more testing on you before—”

“Can I have children again?” I interrupted.
